Design Story

Want to know the Swift's origin story? In 2005, we held a contest with Knitty® magazine and asked their readers to tell us everything they would like to see in the ultimate knitting bag — from colors, materials, and style of bag to functionality, accessories, and size. We received a flood of entries and suggestions. Tom made a few prototypes and sent them off to the editors of Knitty® for review; they responded with their ideas and thoughts. And, when the final design was ready for debut, the editors of Knitty® held a naming party. Many great names were suggested, but the winning entry was chosen because it has significance to knitters but doesn't designate the bag as solely for knitting: it's a great bag for all kinds of crafts, and many folks will find its clear pockets and stuff sack useful features in an everyday bag. Special thanks go to Amy and all the editors and readers of Knitty® magazine: we couldn't have done it without you.

Button Closure Open-Top Tote

The Swift is an open-top tote. Looking at the profile view, you will see that the top sides are V-shaped, giving the bag a nice wide opening. The main compartment is spacious and can easily fit a big project, such as a chunky sweater. The top of the tote is secured with a button closure. We deliberately chose to omit the use of a main zipper so that you don't risk snagging your yarn when loading and unloading your bag.

An O-ring is situated on each interior end of the bag right below the "V." The O-rings are designed to allow you to clip the included Yarn Stuff Sack to the left or right side of the bag. You can also clip the additional Yarn Stuff Sacks or other optional organizers to the O-rings.

On the interior front and back of the main compartment are two clear urethane pockets. The pockets mirror each other and they close with strong #8 YKK zippers. We kept these pockets flat to minimize the space in the main compartment. This is a great spot to put anything that you want to keep in sight. The pockets also flap up, allowing you to easily access them even when the main compartment is fully loaded.

Above each clear urethane pocket is an O-ring for additional pouches. One also has an included and attached Key Strap.

Flat Bottom

We designed the Swift to be able to stand on its own. You can feel at ease putting the bag down in front of you on the plane or next to you at a café or park without worrying about the contents of your bag spilling out. (We've heard that balls of yarn rolling out is about the worst thing that could happen.)

The flat bottom of the Swift is made with our heavy duty 1050 denier Black Ballistic fabric. If you tend to  put your bag on the ground, you don't have to worry about the bottom tearing since the fabric is quite strong. And the dark color will prevent any dirt from becoming easily visible.

PORON® Foam-Padded Handles

The handles are the ideal length for carrying in hand or over the shoulder, with the highest quality PORON® foam padding.

What's Included

Clear Bottom, Medium Yarn Stuff Sack

The included Medium Yarn Stuff Sack is made of the same fabric that backs the clear urethane pockets of the Swift. This Yarn Stuff Sack can accommodate a large ball of yarn. It has a drawstring top and a triangular clip open/close grommet to feed yarn through. The clear urethane bottom allows you to quickly see what the Yarn Stuff Sack contains.

8" Snaphook/Snaphook Key Strap

As with most of our bags, we've included a key strap. 8" long from tip-to-tip, a snaphook on either end. Good for attaching your keys to.

What's Optional

Yarn Stuff Sack

We include one Yarn Stuff Sack, but you can always add more and clip them onto the O-rings.

Travel Stuff Sack

Similar to the Yarn Stuff Sack but oval bottom. Comes in 4 sizes.

Clear 3D Organizer Cube or All-Fabric 3D Organizer Cube

Store smaller supplies.

Large Travel Tray

Perfect for a ball of yarn.

Cache

We know knitters like to have access to their patterns. We also think the Swift can double up as a work tote. Store your tablet or up to 14" laptop in a Cache for extra protection, then slip it inside the main compartment.

Freudian Slip

Add five additional pockets of organization — three zippered pockets on one side and two large open-top pockets on the other.

    Best Knitting Bag Ever

I love this bag. The two clear interior zippered pockets are just the right depth, I like that they don’t go all the way way down and I can tuck the medium size Freudian slip or my knitting book behind it. The knitting stuff sack is brilliant! I often use it separately or even hang it from my wrist while knitting.

    Excellent bag

This is my second swift bag. I've had the first for what, 10 to 15 years. When was that first release? There's nothing wrong with it but I wanted a new one. I've used mine as a lunch bag slash bring everything but my kitchen sink to work. I've used it for knitting, as a purse for air travel, groceries and a host of other things. Mostly daily. For all those years. This bag stands up to everything. I am still using my original bag as well as my new one. Lots of nice features inside tge bag. Clips and pockets. This is definitely a 10 STAR product.

Always delighted to see a Tom Bihn package waiting for us! I’ve been secretly craving another Swift - have run short on room with my original Swift I purchased in 2018. This one is subtle and gorgeous at the same time! I got the clear 3-D Organizer and it has been put to work as an emergency bag for asthma inhaler and diabetes treatments for low blood sugar. (It is now clipped into my Medium Cafe bag/purse)

The wee Ghost Whale pouch will definitely be holding business cards.

I carried this in to the local yarn shop I frequent, and the lady who works there immediately noticed my bags, seeing the Tom Bihn labels. She mentioned seeing a Moveable Feast in play as a yarn bag, and had no idea the Swift existed.

The rotating carabiner clips are perfect for stretching the capacity of o-rings inside the bag, and helping wrangle all the yarn bags and mini zip cases that inhabit both swifts.

Get those mini-carabiners. Surprisingly small but utterly practical!

    Phenomenal

The wisteria/purple smoke color combined with burnt orange hooked me as they are both favorites. This is a color way I could not pass up. I am an owner of a purple/black Swift bag (2014/2015) though the material is rough and causes pilling on my clothes when I used it as an everyday carry type bag for a trip. I am not into owning more than I need though I do tend to store projects in my bag. The size of the Swift is perfect when traveling for a project and daily essentials. My favorite aspects of the bag are the clear zippered interior pouches with O-rings, and the side cuts on the bag - the simple closure. The bag sits well. Sturdy, comfortable, well-proportioned and versatile for a crafty traveler. I waited and waited for them to move back into production with a material that was smooth. So worth the wait!

    The Perfect Knitting Bag!

I bought my first Swift more than a decade ago, when the bag was brand new. Loved it then and still love it. But I needed another so that I had bags for multiple projects. The Wisteria colour is fresh and new, combining with the navy so well. I'm expecting the same durability and longevity as my original Swift.
