Flying with a baby? It’s an adventure—one that requires strategy, patience, and a well-packed bag.

I’m a mom of a baby under one year old, and I travel frequently for both work and personal reasons. These days, my little one occasionally tags along on my trips. He’s already been on a few cross-country flights as my lap infant, and while I’m still fine-tuning my packing strategy, I’ve developed a system that works well so far.

Checked Bags vs. Carry-On: Should I Check a Bag When Flying with a Baby?

Before having a baby, I was firmly in the no-checked-bag camp—I wanted to get out of the airport as quickly as possible. But traveling with a baby? That rule had to go. Since I already have to gate-check his stroller and car seat, I might as well check everything else as well, keeping only what I absolutely need on the plane.

Choosing the Right Bags: Best Diaper Bag for Flying with a Baby

I discovered that the bags that I already use for everyday carry transition perfectly into a baby's use case. Here is my set-up:

At 5’5”, I find that the Synik 26 is my favorite sized Synik. Its five exterior pockets provide quick access to diapers and milk—which is key. When my baby is hungry, he fusses fast. The last thing I want is to dig through a deep bag or wrestle with zippers to get to his milk. Same goes for diapers—easy access is everything.

Packing Priorities: What to Pack for a Flight with a Baby (Diaper Bag Essentials)

When packing for a baby, my priority isn’t packing light—it’s being prepared. Because something will go wrong.

  • Flight delay? Extra milk and diapers.
  • Diaper blowout on the plane? Spare outfit.
  • Unexpected turbulence + spit-up? Another extra outfit.
  • Fussy baby? Snacks, toys, and anything that keeps him entertained.

What Other TOM BIHN Bags Work as a Diaper Bag?

Looking for an alternative to the Synik 26? Here are a few great options:

  • Synik or Synapse (various sizes) – The five quick-access pockets make all the other sizes Syniks (22, 30) and Synapses (19, 25) great choices. Pick the size that best suits your build and capacity needs.
  • Parental Unit – A messenger-style bag designed specifically for use as a diaper bag. Ideal if you prefer a crossbody over a backpack or want something smaller than a backpack for a shorter flight.
  • Paramour – The 3D front pocket has three sections, perfect for organizing milk bottles and diapers. The spacious main compartment provides plenty of storage.
