Behind The Seams: Building the Nomad 16

Behind The Seams: Building the Nomad 16

About a year ago, we released the Nomad Tote—an 11-liter shoulder bag designed for digital nomads. While it’s received a lot of praise, we’ve also heard critical feedback: not capacious enough to fit a mobile office, and no crossbody carry option.

You’ve spoken, and we’ve listened.

A Bigger Nomad, Built on Feedback

Our Production and Design teams have been working behind the scenes to create a larger Nomad. The result? The Nomad 16: a 16-liter tote with an optional crossbody strap and roomier interior to accommodate your daily essentials and tech gear.

When we began designing the larger size, a few things were a no-brainer: more capacity, a crossbody strap, and all the same thoughtful features from the original. Your requests helped guide this development from the very beginning.

Designed to Carry More—Without Feeling Bulky

We knew we wanted the Nomad 16 to fit a 15"–16" laptop, so we started there. It needed to be big enough for work gear, snacks, and a few extras, but not so large that it felt bulky when carried by the tote handles. The first sample hit all the right notes—balanced, easy to carry—so all that was left were minor adjustments.

After the Synik 26 project, our designer Jose had truly mastered the art of scaling a bag—adjusting the dimensions of an existing design while keeping its character. Thanks to that experience, scaling up the Nomad 11 into the Nomad 16 went smoothly.

What’s New—and What Stays the Same

With any project like this, we’re careful not to overdo it. The goal is to preserve what made the original great and only add features that improve the overall experience.

The crossbody strap is the only new addition—and it’s one that felt necessary with the increased capacity. It won’t be added to the Nomad 11, as the smaller size doesn’t require it and the addition would shift the carry experience too far from its tote-style roots.

“I like reading about how folks are using the bag and seeing what kind of things they carry,” Jose said. “It helps me understand how our customers are interacting with the product, and it also helps with future design ideas. I’m happy the Nomad [11] has been well received, and I can’t wait to see how the new size is used.”

From the Floor: Notes from Our Production Team

The path from prototype to production was remarkably smooth for the Nomad 16. That wasn’t the case for the Nomad 11, which saw a one-month delay last year due to the challenges of getting the top binding and end-to-end zipper just right.

This time around, things went differently. With a year of experience and refinement under their belts, our Production team has truly mastered this part of the construction process. The result? No delays, no surprises—just a solid build from the first sample.

Real-World Feedback

One member of our team who’s been carrying a test version of the Nomad 16 for months shared a story:

"I brought the prototype to our Bellevue store opening party back in September. A few customers noticed the bigger size right away and asked about it. They said it looked like the perfect tote. I usually carry a 13” laptop, so the Nomad 11 works fine—but what I love about the Nomad 16 is that I can bring my laptop, lunch, snacks... everything I need for a full day out."

What Fits in the Nomad 16?

Here’s what we’ve comfortably packed inside:

It’s the kind of bag that lets you do it all—without needing to switch bags mid-day.
